Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made pieces of porcelain that are cemented to the front surface of your teeth to correct a variety of aesthetic issues. Unlike some dental treatments, veneers are an irreversible, permanent option.

What can veneers fix?

Veneers are a relatively quick fix for a wide variety of dental issues like:

  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Uneven, misaligned or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Discolored or stained teeth

If you have a bite issue or grind your teeth excessively, you may want to talk to Dr. Densmore about whether you are a good candidate for veneers.

What is the process of getting veneers?

Getting veneers usually takes two to three appointments. There are four major steps for the treatment.

Step 1 Developing a treatment plan

At the initial appointment, you and Dr. Densmore will discuss the dental problems you’d like to address. He’ll examine your teeth and may take X-rays, so he can evaluate whether you are a good candidate for veneers.

Step 2  Preparing the tooth

If Dr. Densmore recommends veneers for you, you’ll come back to have your tooth prepared. He will shave or thin out a very thin layer of your enamel – about ½ millimeter – to make room for the veneer. Depending on your pain threshold, Dr. Densmore may numb the area prior to thinning.

Step 3 Milling the veneer

Dr. Densmore will then make an impression of your tooth and send it to a laboratory for milling. In some cases, he may place a temporary veneer on your tooth while the permanent one is being made.

Step 4 Cementing and Curing

When the veneer returns from the lab, Dr. Densmore will check the size and shape and will make adjustments, as needed. He then cleans, polishes, and etches your tooth to create optimal conditions for strong bonding. He then cements the veneers to your tooth and uses a special light to cure the cement quickly. He’ll finish the appointment by checking your bite and making adjustments, as needed.

Dr. Densmore may want to see you a week or two after the placement of your veneers to confirm that they are comfortable and fit well.
